Goals For The New Year?

Here we are on the cusp of yet another adventure-filled year. How did you do with your resolutions for 2008? Did you come close? If not, maybe you can give it another chance for 2009. If you did hit your goals/resolutions, now may be the time to up the ante :)

We're in the planning stages for 2009 and can't wait to see what wonderful surprises the year has in store for us. Here's hoping that everyone stays in good health!

A fun picture I took while staying at the Hale Koa hotel in Waikiki this past weekend. I almost remember being a kid and jumping in like that. Almost. We also got to go see Santa at Ala Moana and watch the performance of The Christmas Gift of Aloha, which is always a treat. All in all, it was a nice "stay-cation".

My New Chair

I love pictures of children in chairs. I just picked up this cute little chair and, of course, I had to give it a test drive. My son begrudgingly obliged me (under duress of not receiving a lollipop).

Peace On Earth

The dove is the international symbol of peace. I'm not quite sure this is a dove per se, but for the purpose of this post, it will do just fine and dandy :) I caught this little fella on his way to ... well, I'm not sure, lol!!! I think actually he was making his way to a breakfast buffet over at the local pigeon watering hole. Anyway, as the year winds down, I'd like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and whatever other holiday it is that you may celebrate. It is my sincere wish and hope that all who have read my blog have enjoyed my posts and musings over this past year. I look forward to sharing more of my images with you and I look forward as well to your comments. It is my wish as well that peace will ultimately prevail and that good continues to triumph over evil.

A 2nd Grade Christmas Show

I had the distinct honor of attending my daughter's 2nd grade Christmas program over at Waimalu Elementary School. My little girl even had a speaking part :) Anywho, I thought I would share a couple of pictures from the program with you. The first shot is of her with our statue of Santa.

Do You Drink Espresso?

My mother bought me an espresso machine recently and I have to say that I am still at a loss as to how much sugar to add so that it doesn't taste bitter. I like my coffee sweet and have discovered that American coffee is very forgiving when it comes to adding sugar. It won't taste bitter if you put too much. Espresso is a beast of a different nature, which I have yet to tame. Right now, I'm at about a teaspoon and a half. Not too bad, but I know it can be better :) Any suggestions out there? Please feel free to respond and let me know if there is an ideal and precise measurement for that perfect cup of espresso.

On a non-photography related story, (gasp!-yes, I can discuss things other than photography, after all it is MY blog, LOL!!!) I wanted to send out my congratulations to an old high school classmate of mine, Eric Gregory. After many years of study and travel, Eric is an assistant professor of religion at Princeton and this year published his first book, Politics and the Order of Love: An Augustinian Ethic of Democratic Citizenship. As you may have gathered, this is not light reading. If you are interested in religion and politics, you can pick up this book here at Amazon.com. Many congratulations to you, Eric, and much continued success!

These are my top boys, Bristol and Bergen. It has been such a joy to be able to watch them grow in the past year. They recently came in for Bergen's 9-month session. Here are a couple of images we did.

Still Trying To Figure Out What Gift To Buy For Christmas??

Are you at a loss for what to give the person that has everything or is just plain difficult to shop for? Why not give them a gift certificate for a portrait session from Red Bird Photography? Gift certificates are available!

Santa, Can You Keep A Secret?

Santa was very busy this weekend taking down requests from the little ones regarding what they wanted for Christmas. This little doll even told him a secret. Santa is a pretty trustworthy guy and kept her secret. She was so polite, we think she's got a good shot at getting what she wants, but Santa will ultimately make that decision ;)

Thank you, Santa!

Wow, Santa was amazing! We just wrapped up our Christmas pictures with Santa over at USA Baby and boy, we had a great time! It was extra special because there were no long lines, no crowds and Santa got to spend some quality time with some very special little boys and girls. Thank you to USA Baby for hosting us and to Santa for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit with a few of the children from Hawaii.

Santa's Here!

So, I'll be photographing that jolly old fellow this weekend over at USA Baby. If you're in the area, stop by and say hello! Since I won't have time to attend to my blog this weekend, I will leave you with this recent image. I just love baby bottoms, don't you?!?

Sleeping Children Around The World

We have a lot to be grateful for: our health, the roof over our heads, that we can provide for our children, and the list goes on. But somehow, I didn't know how to express that gratitude. I wanted to find a way to give back to the universe, so to speak. Well, God placed a few opportunities in my path. First it was the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Halloween Costume Contest Fundraiser, which was a great success. Then the Toys for Tots program of which I will be donating up to five dollars from session fees at the Santa Holiday mini-sessions atUSA Baby for anyone who donates a toy, and last but not least Sleeping Children Around The World. This is an organization which provides bedkits to the neediest of children in underdeveloped nations. One hundred percent of your donation goes to purchasing the bedkits. I belong to a group of photographers trying to raise money to purchase those bedkits. If you feel like you would like to give but maybe your finances aren't what they should be, don't worry. Here is a short quote from St. Francis of Assisi: "For it is in giving that we receive." Truer words were never spoken.

Interested in Photo Tips?

I thought it might be fun to give some photo tips every once in a while and thought I'd see if there was any interest. E-mail me at gabi@redbirdphotography.com if you would like to see tips here on the blog. We all learn through sharing and I'd love to help anyone interested.

The Greatest and Most Difficult Job Ever

What is the most difficult job you can think of? Surgeon, pilot, police officer, construction worker? If those are your guesses, you're not even close :) Being a parent, in our opinion, ranks as the most difficult job. If you are a parent, you know what I'm talking about. You've been charged by God, fate, destiny, or whatever higher power you believe in to nurture and shape another living being. How well you do that job will be reflected in how successful in life that little person becomes. That's pretty overwhelming. You are also putting yourself last most of the time so that you can focus on this part of yourself that you've brought into the world. It means putting aside your own personal aspirations and dreams perhaps for 18 years. But what an amazing accomplishment it is when you have succeeded in making a person who is loving, honest, respectful, and has a strong moral compass.

A Meaningful Gift

I was out shopping today and wondering what in the world am I going to get my mom for Christmas?? I don't know about anyone else, but as I get older, I feel less and less inclined to buy things just for the sake of buying. I want whatever it is I give to have some sentimental value to it. (This way of thinking makes sense to adults, but not to kids unfortunately.) So, this year I will probably be printing some images I did of the kids. Hopefully, she isn't reading this, lol. Oops.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We like to poke fun at ourselves sometimes and this would be no exception. At the behest of a school buddy, we made it a tradition to photograph our newborn children alongside our intended holiday meal. Kind of cute considering they were either smaller than the feast to be or about the same size :) Anyway, here's one of those shots.

All kidding aside, we do wish you all the very best this Thanksgiving. We hope you are able to share it with your family and that your bellies and your hearts are full:)

Like Mother, Like Daughter

Well, it may be too soon to tell yet, but what a cute pair this mother and daughter are! I wish I had had this type of picture of myself with my mother and, of course, with my daughter. Every moment counts and if you think you'd like to do this type of shot with your son or with your daughter, just do it!

A Little Down Under In Hawaii

I wanted to share some images I did recently of a very talented photographer friend of mine who came with her husband from VERY far away (Australia to be exact) to visit Hawaii. I was thrilled to take their first portraits here. I had a fantastic time with them and hope that one day we'll be able to make the trip to their part of the world. Cheers!

Sharing Some Good News!

I recently entered this image in the Professional Photographers of Hawaii Quarterly Print Competition and found out today that it was honored with a merit. The first challenge is to get your print accepted for competition which I have done now at least five times in the past couple of months; this is no small feat. The next hurdle is scoring high enough to receive a merit which is what I have recently done. It is extremely difficult and I am so grateful to have the quality of my work acknowledged by fellow professional photographers. Thanks go as well to my supportive family and to my clients who give me the inspiration to push myself harder and harder.

Little Angel Izabele

Here's a shot from a session I had this morning. Little Izabele was born last month and is the fourth child for a service member currently deployed overseas. She won't meet her dad until early next year, so we thought we would share this image online in the hopes he can see it.

Sweet, Sweet Baby

I met this sweet little doll today. A mere nine months old, little Krislyn was a ham for the camera and was quite poised. I suspect she will be a force to be reckoned with when she grows up :) If you're wondering about the tutu, yes, it's from Tutu's Bliss.

Let It All Hang Loose!

Sometimes you just have to say to yourself, "Self, you need to loosen up a little and have fun!". There is nothing I enjoy more than pure silly fun, fun that is not at anyone's expense but rather just innocent and goofy. This young lady epitomizes that carefree attitude I'm talking about. Come on, throw on a boa and just have fun! Happy Sunday!!

Raising The Bar

I've been entering print competitions recently and wanted to share one of my recent entries. You may recognize it b/c I posted it last month. Anyway, entering competitions is a way of pushing my creativity just a bit further and pushing the envelope just a bit more. Why do I do it? Because it challenges me to look at my work in a different way and sometimes I come up with things that I never would have thought to do under normal circumstances. It's all good really, especially for my clients who get more creativity from me versus Walmart :)

Are You Ready?

Well, today it hit me. There are only 42 days until Christmas. Yikes. I'm not ready. I'm not even ready for Thanksgiving! Do you know what triggered this for me? I was in the midst of my daily/nightly ritual/vicious cycle of picking up the mess of toys my son had strewn across the house when all of a sudden I heard the song Jingle Bells being emitted by one of his mystery toys. You know what I'm talking about. That random toy that you hear but can't actually find b/c it's buried under a bunch more toys.

Anyway, I could use a few more weeks to plan and shop. Well, maybe I can count on Santa to bail me out at the last minute. He's a resourceful fellow after all.

Quadruplet Newborns!

Here they are! These beautiful children were born last month and came in today with their wonderful parents and grandmothers for their first portrait session. We worked pretty hard, but these little ones really stood up to the challenge and had to have been the most well behaved babies I've ever seen. No small feat and obviously quite a tribute to the hard work their mom and dad have put into taking care of them. Life will never be the same in their home; what a blessing!

Santa Claus Is Coming!!!

Can you believe we already have to start planning for Christmas?!? It's getting more and more expensive to buy gifts for family and what better and more sentimental way to show them you love them than to get a holiday portrait done. We are offering holiday portraits again this year at USA Baby with a twist. We will have Santa there. If you would like your child's portrait done with Santa, great! If you are looking for a more traditional family portrait without the jolly guy in red, Santa can step out of the way for that. The best part is that you won't be stuck in a huge long line at the mall. How can you beat that?!?

The cost again is VERY reasonable and a steal. For $30 you get the session and one 8x10. The normal price through our studio is $148. That is a savings of $118!! Better still, if you bring in a toy for the Toys for Tots, you get $1 off the session fee (max of $5 off)!! You will have the option to order holiday cards and additional enlargements at the time of the session. Here is the link to view our holiday card selection: http://gabriellawright.blogspot.com/2008/08/new-holiday-cards-are-here.html .

Please call as sessions will be reserved on a first come-first served basis. Dates will be December 6 and 7!

I Got Lollipopped!

Quite regal, eh?! This was done at the recent workshop I attended by a mother-daughter team, Mama Shan and her daughter Nora. They have a photography studio in Nashville and Mama Shan is a Photoshop whiz. This look is their trademark "Lollipop" action for Photoshop.

Finally Home

I just got back in yesterday evening after a very long day of traveling. What an awesome trip. I don't know any other way to put it. Now I have a lot of things to catch up on and can't wait to let everyone in on my new projects and events.

Hurry Up and Wait

Alright, airport wi-fi stinks. I tried downloading a movie to watch on my marathon plane ride back to Oahu and it failed miserably. But hey! I now have a three-video credit from Apple. Whoopee. I can't use it on the plane. So, maybe I'll try to get some shut eye and hope that I sleep through most of the flight. I'd buy a magazine or two, but that would mean more to carry, lol!! I'm not lazy, but I'm already carrying a 20 pound camera bag and laptop. I'm not willing to test my fortitude with a couple of extra things thrown in :) Something (namely my back) just might break.

I'm Outta Here!

Actually, I'm heading out of Tennessee in a matter of a few hours. If you had told me at the beginning of the year that I would be going to Tennessee not once but twice, I would have told you to get your head checked. Unbelievable but true.

I leave you with a picture I took on my last trip to the country capital of the south. Until we meet again!

I Love My Job

So, some of you may not know this, but currently I am at a photography workshop in Nashville, TN. I have finally met in person some of the most amazing people/photographers in the U.S. and Canada; up until now, we all knew each other via our photography forum. There has been an insane amount of information shared and I consider it an honor to be associated with this group. I must also thank my husband for taking time off from his job to watch the kids and give me the chance to make this long trek. He knows just how important photography is to me and I wouldn't have made it this far without his support.

Anyway, it is a wonderful feeling to be able to rub elbows with some industry greats as well as learn the latest and greatest. This trip has been a blessing for me.

Here is the tutu lady with her hubby and their youngest :) We had an awesome time up on the North Shore doing her family portraits! If you are in the market for a tutu for your little one, check out her new blog: Tutu's Bliss. She and her older daughter design and produce these amazing fantasy outfits.

Wow, yeah, just when it looked like the Boston Red Sox were on their way out, they rallied to beat the Rays 8-7. Someone in our home was put through the emotional ringer watching this game.

Vintage Look

Here's something a little different from the norm. I thought I would apply a textured look to these images to make them look somewhat vintage. I don't do this too often, but I do like how they came out.

Today is my baby boy's birthday. Drew turns the big two today. It's hard to believe how fast time flies. He has been such a blessing to his mom and dad and his big sister. We're blessed to have him in our lives and we love him very much, in case there was any doubt out there :)
